Every spring since 1989, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective brings a guest dance company to Fort Wayne to inspire, educate, enhance the community, and of course entertain. FWDC has also hosted three Indiana Dance Festivals featuring a guest artist performance, an Indiana Dancers Showcase performance, and three days of workshops.

Fort Wayne Dance Collective is thrilled to announce Battery Dance as the 2017 guest dance company! Battery Dance connects the world through dance. An integral part of the fabric of New York City for 40 years, Battery supports the creative process, educates children in the New York City schools, and enriches the general public through local programs and performances, national and international tours, and international arts exchange programs.

Based in Lower Manhattan, Battery Dance has produced nearly 100 original dance works choreographed by its founder and artistic director Jonathan Hollander, in collaboration with a diverse array of composers and designers, and its cast of outstanding dancers.

Battery Dance will be performing master classes and lecture demonstrations in many of the schools, social service sites and community centers that Fort Wayne Dance Collective serves through its Dance in Education, Dance for Disabilities and Dance for Community programs. The week-long residency with Battery will begin March 27 and culminate in a dynamic live performance on the Arts United Center stage April 1, 2017. The centerpiece of Battery’s 2016 New York season was the world premiere of The Durga Project, which they will be performing for the first time in the Midwest right here in Fort Wayne, IN! This live performance will incorporate local dancers who participated in the residency with Battery Dance.

The Durga Project weaves together the movement vocabularies, sonorities and aesthetics of the U.S. and India into a choreographic fantasy. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this world renowned dance company live!

This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest, which is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional contributions from the Indiana Arts Commission. Fort Wayne Dance Collective is a principal partner of Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne. This presentation is made possible by Lincoln Financial Foundation, Shruti Foundation and other generous funders.
